So I decided lately that I need to improve my upper body strength and my posture and I decided to hire personal trainer to show me some exercises. When I was at the gym I approached a young man sitting in the reception area and I asked him if he’s personal trainer. He said yes. I wanted 30 minutes session but he told me he doesn’t do them and no other trainers do. I was a bit deflated, I barely ever exercise over one hour and with new exercises it will be even more difficult but I was determined so I agreed. He told me he charges £25 per session and before starting he does assesment which is free. We arranged the time for that assesment and I left. Only later I realised that if he does free assesment he probably wants more regular commitment than ‘once in a while’ which is what I’d like.
During the assesment I told him I probably have dyspraxia because I’m clumsy and can’t repeat moves very well. He seemed to be ok with that. He measured me and we talked about my goals. And then he asked me how many sessions per week I would like. Per week? Does he really think I’m that rich? ‘Once a month’ I said even though that was still too often for me.
‘Once a month?’ He asked. ‘In that case that will be 30 quid’. ‘You’re very assertive’ I commented laughing even though he started to annoy me. He also said I have to pay by bank transfer no later that 24h before the session. That wasn’t a problem but he didn’t give me his bank details. ‘I’ll email you’ he said.
Finally we had to arrange the time. We agreed a date and I asked him for a slot around lunch time as that’s when it’s less busy. He said he couldn’t do lunch time, he can do 5pm, so I asked for a different day. 5 pm is not busy, he insisted. It only starts getting busy at 6pm, according to him. Maybe he had different understanding of busy than me but at the time he really annoyed me as I thought he should give me a slot I’m comfortable with.
Finally, when I left, I realised I didn’t take his contact details.
Neurotypicals often have their own agenda when they try to arrange something. What agenda he could have had, I asked myself? Possibly he preferred to give a session when it was more busy because he wanted other people to see him, hoping it will bring more clients? That makes sense, doesn’t it? I then got even more annoyed and I decided that when he contacts me I’ll tell him I changed my mind as his terms and conditions don’t suit me.
But you know what? I’ve never heard from him. Do you think he lost my contact details or possibly he decided later on that he doesn’t want to be seen with someone who is clumsy as that would ruin his marketing efforts?
Mind you, it’s only a budget gym.
