Someone needs picking up from the station

I was meant not to blog about work, however this is not a sensitive information so I should be OK. So basically, when I was on my own today the phone rang. Normally the management answers but as it kept ringing I finally picked it up.

The person on the other end introduced themselves and said he’s just catching the train from Bristol and can someone pick him up from Swindon train station.

I knew absolutely nothing about it but I just said ‘I can’t pick you up, I’m sorry, but maybe one of the managers could? Let me have a look for them’ and I proceeded to run around the house to find them.

I finally found a deputy and passed her the phone. I left and then started thinking why didn’t I ask more questions. I could have for example said ‘If you don’t mind me asking, who did you speak with previously?’ Or ‘What is this regarding?’

What if the person had called a wrong number? I’d then look like some kind of idiot to the deputy. Thank god that turned out not to be the case as we indeed expected someone.

So, why didn’t I ask more questions? It’s not enough to just say that I’m not a great communicator – this would be very generic response. I didn’t ask more questions because, as I wasn’t told we are expecting anyone I assumed that it must be some kind of secret and I have to get on with it and just find the manager.

Next time, when the phone rings, I need to ask what that is regarding.
